Spectrum News 1: Do you have a favorite part of the show?įrieden: A part that I always always love is the very last number that I do with our wonderful Velma Kelly played by Logan Floyd. I feel like now I really know who Katie’s version of Roxie is… As long as I’m really truthful to my emotions … I feel as though it’s my Roxie and I’m not trying to copy anyone else. I use a little bit of my innocence since I’m a little bit younger playing Roxie than many people have been. Through my movement I was able to find it, and through several performances I was able to find it, and their direction. We have to find your own Roxie.” So they were really great in bringing Katie to Roxie. And the creative team was like, “No, no, no, no. Probably one of the biggest challenges of this show for me was trying to find my own Roxie, because so many people have done this role particularly that I admire so much and I’ve grown up loving such as Ann Reinking and Charlotte d’Amboise - there’s so many people and I just wanted to do what they did. What is it like bringing someone who so many people know and love to life on stage?įrieden: Actually, it was very intimidating. Spectrum News 1: “Chicago” is a very iconic, very well-known musical, and Roxie is an icon herself. Katie Frieden and the company of "Chicago" (Jeremy Daniel) It is such an honor to be a part of this legacy that is “Chicago” the musical. This role means so much to me because it’s challenged me, it’s pushed me and I love the character so much. I always thought of myself as a dancer first, and now, through this role… I’ve really started to come into my own as a singer and actor. But to see myself as Roxie, that’s far fetched from what my head used to think. I guess maybe I would have seen myself as an ensemble member. Spectrum News 1: Growing up with this musical, did you ever think you would not only be touring with “Chicago,” but be Roxie?įrieden: Oh my gosh, I could have only dreamed. It was a very grueling, challenging week, but it was great I learned a lot through it. I originally went in for the ensemble, but the creative team kind of saw something in me and they tried me out for Roxie Hart. When I saw that there were auditions for it, I knew I absolutely had to audition for it. That’s always been a dance style that I’ve been very attracted to and the music’s just so great. Spectrum News 1: Why were you interested in “Chicago?”įrieden: “Chicago” has always been one of my favorite musicals, particularly because of the Fosse-style of dance that’s in the show. We caught up with her as she was getting ready for a performance in Louisiana the week before she’d take the stage in Wisconsin. Katie Frieden portrays leading lady Roxie Hart in “Chicago’s” national tour. Her dreams of stardom seem to burn out upon her arrest, but it turns out, crime may just be the ticket to fame she was looking for. Roxie killed her lover when he tried to end their affair. Velma murdered her husband and sister after finding out they’ve been sleeping together. The classic musical, set in the 1920s, follows two women - Roxie and Velma - who are each incarcerated for murder. Katie Frieden as Roxie Hart in "Chicago." (Jeremy Daniel)
